POSITION:                     Elementary Counselor

REPORTS TO:                Building Principals Where Assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Certified School Counselor or Professional Contract for                                                                                            Family Service Worker

EVALUATION:                Building Principals Where Assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:     

 

SUMMARY:                       The elementary counselor provides assistance and support to the students in the area of social and emotional wellness under the direction and leadership of the building principal.

 

QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. South Dakota certification in school counseling or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or related health field.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to facilitate teams; ability to work well with administrators, teachers, students and parents.
  3. Prior counseling experience preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:  Primary Duties

 

  1. Develop, implement and evaluate counseling and guidance plans in accordance with standards set forth by the state and commensurate with the school district’s plan.
  2. Provide individual and group counseling and guidance including aiding in the personal development of students social and emotional wellness.
  3. Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, staff and outside agencies when appropriate.
  4. Participate in activities that contribute to effective operations of the school.
  5. Provide orientation and support to new students and their families.
  6. Assist with referral, placement and follow up services for students and families needing additional support, placement and counseling and/or services.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the building principal.

 

OTHER DUTIES

 

  1. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, parents and the community.
  2. Maintain confidentiality of all student records and interactions in accordance with FERPA laws.
  3. Use excellent oral and written communication.
  4. Act and speak in a professional manner.
  5. Perform all duties with the awareness of district requirements and board policies.
  6. Participate in professional development and trainings as requested.
