SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:     

 

SUMMARY:                       The Lakota language teacher instructs students in the oral and written use of the Lakota language under the direction and leadership of the building principal.

 

QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. South Dakota certification in elementary teaching with coursework and/or experience in Lakota Language instruction or Lakota Studies.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to facilitate teams; ability to work well with administrators, teachers, students and parents.
  3. Prior Lakota language teaching experience preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:  Primary Duties

  1. Instruct students in the Lakota language (written and oral) using the l District’s adopted Lakota language curriculum.
  2. Assist classroom teachers who are not Lakota language speakers in supporting and extending lessons taught by the Lakota language teacher using the District’s adopted Lakota language curriculum.
  3. Use the District approved curriculum to plan lessons each week. Submit lesson plans weekly to building administrator using administrator approved format.
  4. Use effective instructional strategies that are aligned to the District’s goals, mission, vision and guiding principles.
  5. Plan instruction that is engaging and at the student’s developmentally appropriate level.
  6. Establishes routines and procedures in the classroom for effective classroom management.
  7. Maintain a classroom environment that is clean, orderly, inviting and free of clutter.
  8. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information about students and their families.
  9. Maintain student records, including attendance, behavior, assessments and grades in a timely manner and in accordance with the direction of the building administrator.
  10. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior.
  11. Participate in all family nights, programs, and extra-curricular activities at the school as assigned by the building administrator.
  12. Maintain student discipline in the classroom that is conducive to learning. Use District approved discipline strategies and resources.
  13. Communicate consistently, respectfully and professionally with parents/guardians and as directed by building administrator.
  14. Monitor student progress.
  15. Supervise students at lunch, recess, hallways and other areas as assigned by building administrator.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

 

OTHER DUTIES

 

  1. Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. The teacher is continuously responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
  2. Professionally and respectfully participate in District and school provided professional development.
  3. Implement instructional strategies provided through professional development.
  4. Collaborate respectfully and professionally with colleagues and all staff.
  5. Follow all District policies and the SD Teacher Code of Ethics.
  6. Maintain appropriate certification for teaching position.
